With it being March, I’m currently in my Spring shoulder-season, offering guided fly-fishing on a number of streams flowing near Camp David, north of Frederick, Maryland – my hometown. Now, Marine One flying overhead from Washington, D.C. to the presidential retreat was a common sight during the Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations; basically throughout my formative years. All four of these men were fond of Camp David. In contrast, it’s reported that President Trump is not. That might explain why I’ve spotted Marine One only once since returning to Frederick, and that was while I was fly-fishing Big Hunting Creek mid-November 2024 when Biden was in office. Of course, the fact that I’m in Maryland only 6-months of the year – from March to May, and then again from September to November – certainly has something to do with it.
Counterfactually-Speaking
Had I been a fly-fishing guide working the Catoctins either in the late 1970s or in the late 1980s to early 1990s, I might have been pushed-off Big Hunting Creek by Secret Service agents given that both Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush frequently visited Camp David and were avid fly-anglers. However, I doubt that’ll be a problem nowadays, at least for the foreseeable future. Even if President Trump’s attitude toward Camp David improves, fly-fishing isn’t something he seems to partake. I mean there’s no chatter or photos demonstrating it to be so.
A New Presidential Ranking
It’s not that I can’t imagine President Trump enjoying fly-fishing, though. If he likes golf, then he probably would enjoy casting a fly to some unsuspecting fish. Although it wouldn’t be to a trout. You see, totally independent of whether you support his policies or even like him, the man clearly wins the bronze medal in the contest for being The ‘Fightingest’ President of the United States to date, sharing the podium with the likes of Theodore Roosevelt and Andrew Jackson, who win the silver and gold, respectively.
“Let Freedom Rev!”
It then should come as no surprise that UFC Freedom 250 is Trump’s idea. Now, I follow MMA and would love to get my hands on a ticket . Yet, I hear they’re reserved for military personnel, and I understand why. Although the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., taking place this August 23rd, is also Trump’s idea, and the good thing is that it’s more or less an open event. Therefore, I certainly will be in the crowd for that.

Never call me that.
But I’m losing focus now. The point is that I believe a trout is too dainty a fish for Trump. Instead, I think a barracuda is more his style. And I’ve nothing to gain by admitting it. For I strictly fly-fish for trout, which makes me a prima donna when it comes to fieldsports. Just don’t call me ‘low-energy Steve.’ You do that and we’re no longer friends.
